Follow Your Bliss/ Joseph Campbell's Monomyth

Follow Your Bliss
The dictionary definition of bliss is “heaven” or “paradise.”
Follow your bliss means whatever you do in this moment, it will brings you into alignment with your true nature. Find out where is your way and don't be afraid to follow it. It is like finding and giving meaning to our life.

Joseph Campbell’s Monomyth  (Hero With A Thousand Faces)
The standard path of the mythological adventure of the hero is a magnification of the formula represented
in the rites of passage: separation--initiation--return: which might be named the nuclear unit of the
monomyth.

Stages of the hero’s journey:

There are twelve steps to the hero’s journey. According to the Oracle Education Foundation Library, those steps are as follows.
Ordinary World: This step refers to the hero's normal life at the start of the story, before the adventure begins.
Call to Adventure: The hero is faced with something that makes him begin his adventure. This might be a problem or a challenge he needs to overcome.

Refusal of the Call: The hero attempts to refuse the adventure because he is afraid.
Meeting with the Mentor: The hero encounters someone who can give him advice and ready him for the journey ahead.
Crossing the First Threshold: The hero leaves his ordinary world for the first time and crosses the threshold into adventure.
Tests, Allies, Enemies: The hero learns the rules of his new world. During this time, he endures tests of strength of will, meets friends, and comes face to face with foes.
Approach: Setbacks occur, sometimes causing the hero to try a new approach or adopt new ideas.
Ordeal: The hero experiences a major hurdle or obstacle, such as a life or death crisis.
Reward: After surviving death, the hero earns his reward or accomplishes his goal.
The Road Back: The hero begins his journey back to his ordinary life.
Resurrection Hero - The hero faces a final test where everything is at stake and he must use everything he has learned.
Return with Elixir: The hero brings his knowledge or the "elixir" back to the ordinary world, where he applies it to help all who remain there.
The classic examples of the monomyth relied upon by Campbell and other scholars include the stories of Osiris, Prometheus, the Buddha, Moses, and Christ.

Additionally, Campbell’s ideas regarding the hero’s journey have been applied by professionals such as Chris Vogler in the creation of Disney classics. In order to understand the hero’s journey, it is important to apply the concept to stories and other work.
Oracle’s Education Foundation Library provides a step-by-step outline of how the hero in the Disney movie Lilo and Stitch follows this journey.

For instance:
Lilo's ordinary world is in Hawaii; Stitch is Experiment 626

The call to adventure occurs when Lilo is sent away. The problem/challenge is a threat that Lilo will be taken from her sister Nani. Stitch then crashes onto earth.

There is no refusal of the call in this story.

The meeting with the mentor occurs when Lilo adopts Stitch. They are each other's mentors.

The crossing of the first threshold occurs when Stitch crashes on Earth.

The characters endure many tests as Stitch learns to become a model citizen.

The approach occurs because Stitch causes problems and there are threats to take Lilo away from Cobra.

The ordeal occurs when Stitch learns he has no family and is alone, and when Cobra takes Lilo who then runs away. Lilo also takes Stitch to go away after discovering he is an alien. Both characters are then captured and it appears that Stitch is dead.

The reward for Stitch is that he wants to be a family and he must rescue Lilo.

The road back occurs when Stitch rescues Lilo from the spaceship.

The resurrection occurs when Stitch and Lilo get to become a family.

The return with Elixir occurs when everyone comes together, the aliens assist with the construction of a new house and everyone becomes friends.

The conclusion of the beautiful thing and ugliest thing

The conclusion of the beautiful thing and ugliest thing:

Ugly
The ugliness are mostly caused by human themselves. In order to satisfy their own needs, they destroy the real beauty. The fact is that human have always been pursuing the external beauty and ignored the internal beauty. Due to this, they destroyed the real beauty, making it ugly and unappealing. Hence, our conclusion is that the ugliest image and thing is the destruction and ignorance of real beauty.

Beautiful
Beauty is related to internal beauty, it is a visual of something that attracts our human mind and pleases our sights. It can also be consider as something that is natural and haven't been affected by other substance or material. All human beings pursue beauty and are always deceived by beautiful things. Beauty itself is good but can also be consider as bad if it is use wrongly. It is fragile, it is amazing, it is rare, it is wonderful, it is pursued by many, that is beauty.

What do you want from this course?

I want to learn things I never could from just youtube tutorials or craft books. Hopefully, I'll also be able to pick up the puzzle pieces of where I'm actually heading to in my future, not tied down to just one direction of becoming a graphic designer.

What do you want to be doing in 5 years? 10 years? 20 years?

I want to become better and better in the things I love doing the most. I don't want to stop taking photos of every moment, making my own music, playing on the piano, creating designs that touch hearts. I want to keep seeing, hearing, and learning as much as I breathe.

What do you hope to get from this particular class?

History has never been my favourite subject. I admit. But Art was and still is my favourite subject until today. So when both of that come together, I was attracted to learn it despite having the word 'History' in the name of this subject. All I hope to gain in studying this is to know the root for all these amazing ideas and and creation I see today in the field of Arts. The people, the community, the culture that made Art, it's all so new and fresh to me. I've not been exposed to this before, and there's just so much to anticipate.

Is History of Arts and Design necessary for your larger goals?

YES. Just one lecture of HoA & Design is enough to leave my jaw hanging. The past is so rich with stories and drawings. It will definitely enrich me so much more in doing my designs for the rest of this course.

The most beautiful thing for me:

Innocence.
freedom from all worries and duplicity.
Like a child, every word and action is sincere and transparent.

The ugliest thing for me:

Destruction.
destruction of all kind; of one's own life, of one's will to live, of a country, of nature etc.
it is the saddest sight for me.

What do you want from this course?
The course I take is Graphic Design and Multimedia. What I want from this course is the technique and skill that related with graphic design.

First will be the drawing skill. Drawing skill is the most basic needs for a graphic designer. As a future graphic designer, I have to draw out my idea so that others can understand what the main purpose of the idea is.

Except drawing skill, the second needs will be computer technique. Computer technique means the using of illustrator, photoshop, indesign, flash and other relevant program. Since I don’t have any knowledge on this kind of program, thus, I have to learn and do a lot of practice during this course taking.

Next, I have to learn to solve problem creatively. In this course, there are several subjects that can improve my creative thinking, such as creative thinking and idea generation, creative communication design, and creative writing. This will increase my ability to express creativity in my artwork.

Hopefully what I learn from my course can be use in my future and the knowledge I get can fulfill my need.

What do you want to be doing in 5 years? 10 years? 20 years?
After five years, I may finish my degree course and start looking for my first job. Or maybe I have started my job for a period of time. When I get my job, I have to work as hard as I can to target the higher position in the company.

After 10 and 20 years, I will plan to open my own business. As I know, having a business is better than having a job. So, I will do my best to run my business as good as possible.

What do you hope to get from this particular class? Is history of art and design necessary do you think for your larger goals?
I want to get from this particular class is the knowledge about history of art and design. This class may show us a lot of art work that are from the past. So that I can learn how the artists can express their feeling and thinking in the work they performed. The combination of color and the arrangement of object in the art work can affect the message it deliver to audience. Thus, this kind of idea will become the most valuable treasure for me because it may help me a lot in my future.

Other than that, I wish to learn other’s cultures from this class too! This is because culture is one of the important element in idea generation, different cultures will give audience different feeling once they look for the art work. Besides, culture also can grab the attention if the art work is familiar with the audience. This is what I learn from social psychology class, familiarity is one of the factors of attractiveness between one another. Same as art work, people will be attracted by the familiar thing. Therefore, I wish to save more information about culture in my brain in order to produce a better work.

To summarize the reasons above, this subject not only teaching some knowledge of design, it also helps to generate idea. Therefore, history of art and design is necessary for every design student.

Image of the most beautiful things for you.

The image I choose is related with food. Human can’t live without food, me too!!  Food can recharge our energy daily. Different food taste will give different feeling. When I’m taking sweet, in that moment, I will feel happy. So if I eat sweet while draw something happy, the feeling of happy will inspire me to think about some idea that related with happy.

Food is also one of the sources of inspiration. We can get many ideas from food, like what I learn from Visual Communication subject, we can create lots of design by a fruit we draw. From the image above, I know that is a burger. But the artist uses their creativity to design and it becomes a shoe. Thus, food can also become an art work!

Image of most ugly thing for you.

This image is ugly, not because of the painter; it is because of the event that appears in this image, a war. War is the ugliest thing for me. War is not only bringing out the death, it also cause many people lost their beloved. From the image, I can see the oppression of the weak by the strong. Those people at the right hand side laid down their lives to protect their homeland. How a sad story if they have their own family waiting for them to back home. I can sense the feeling of sadness and helpless when I look at it.

Despite the pollution of chemicals into the ocean, the beauty of nature is still there, mixing with the fading light of sunset. This image is taken by me and this is the most beautiful thing for me, the beauty of sunset.

5. Image of the most ugly thing for you.
Pollution
(This image is taken from Google Image)
No matter what kind of pollution it is, I won't forgive it for destroying the nature of beauty. Pollution have became even worse every year and it is affecting living beings' health too. I see pollution as death itself. That's why I think this image is the most ugly one so far.
